Candidate Profiles

Cllr Willie Coffey MSP

Willie Coffey has been the Cllr for Onthank in East Ayrshire since 1999.

In 1995 he won ward 3 of Kilmarnock & Loudoun District Council from Labour. He narrowly failed to win ward 14 on the new East Ayrshire Council in 1995, but won Onthank in 1999 and held it in 2003.

Cllr Coffey works for Learning and Teaching Scotland.



Margaret Jamieson

Margaret Jamieson was born in Kilmarnock in 1953.

Margaret was elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and re-elected in 2003. She is a member of the Audit committee and was the convener of a committee overseeing the Glasgow Airport Rail Link.
 
She is a member of several cross party groups addressing animal welfare, drugs and alcohol, visual impairment, and issues surrounding women. 

Previous to being an MSP she worked as a cook for Strathclyde Regional Council and was a  Regional Officer for Unison. 
 


Janette McAlpine

Janette was born in Glasgow and attended Uddingston Grammar School. She went to Paisley University, where she finished her PhD in environmental management in conjunction with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency in 2000.  Following her PhD, Janette undertook a Technology Entrepreneurship at Strathclyde University, where she tutored students on starting up an internet business.  Janette currently works as the Knowledge Transfer Manager for Glasgow Caledonian University.

Dr McAlpine is the former Chairman of the North Lanarkshire Local Government Forum, which was established to stand up for local issues in North Lanarkshire. She was also the candidate in Glasgow Baillieston in the 2003 Scottish Parliamentary Elections. More recently, she stood as Westminster Candidate for Glasgow South in the 2005 General Election.

 Janette currently lives in Stewarton, with her fiancé, James.



Ron Aitken

Ron was born and brought up in Glasgow and was educated at Glasgow University and the School of Oriental and African Studies. He has a BA Degree in Middle East Politics and an MSc Degree in International Politics of Asia. Ron has been a councillor for the Liberal Democrats since 2002.

For ten years he worked as an assistant to various MPs in the House of Commons on issues like Northern Ireland, health, and the environment.

Cheers. That's quite unbelievable that I predicted almost every % vote! Total fluke but I thought Mags would go anyway. Let's hope Willie is a good rep for the next 4 years.

Does anybody know what the word on the street is re Tony Blair's visit last week? His appearance alongside Ms Jamieson at Johnny Walkers was quite amusing on tv. Is he a help or a hinderence to the under-pressure MSP?
