Following the election a number of MSPs unexpectedly lost their seats and some didn't stand for re-election.

This new parliament sees a large intake of new MSPs, 39 in total.

Previous MSPs Not Elected
Kate McLean
Dundee West

Kate Maclean signaled her intention to stand down in June 2006, despite already being selected as the Labour Party candidate for her constituency.  She put her decision down to a "change of heart", telling the BBC, "I've spent 19 years as an elected politician and I feel it's time for a change."

Brian Monteith
Mid Scotland and Fife

Former Conservative MSP Brian Monteith has also ruled out standing again on this occasion. He told the media that he would probably seek work in his former field of PR and marketing, but warned he wasn't writing off a return to politics at some time in the future.

Lord James Douglas Hamilton
Lothians

Lord James served as an MP for 23 years prior to being elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999. Lord James is a life peer, and intends to take his place in the House of Lords.

Maureen MacMillan
Highlands and Islands

Maureen says she has had enough of representing and travelling round the huge region that is the Highlands and Islands.  Her husband Michael, a lawyer and councillor in Easter Ross, is bidding to take her place on Labour's regional list.  However it is understood that Maureen is to stand as a candidate in Ross, Skye and Inverness West, a safe Lib Dem seat.

New MSPs
Lord George Foulkes
Lothians

Lord George Foulkes is first for Labour on the Lothian regional list and if Labour fail to hold on to an Edinburgh seat is likely to join the Scottish Parliament. Lord Foulkes was an Ayr MP for many years, latterly elevated to the House of Lords. He is also well known as former Chairman of Hearts football club.

Cllr Bashir Ahmad
Glasgow

Cllr Ahmad has been a councillor since 2003 for Pollokshields East in Glasgow. Prior to this he owned several shops, restaurants and a hotel before retiring from the business world. He sees his candidature and placement at number two on the regional list as a major step forward in the representation of ethnic minorities at Holyrood.

Michael Russell
South of Scotland

Former MSP Michael Russell is launching another bid to get back into Holyrood and has been placed second on the South of Scotland list.   He was an MSP in the first Scottish Parliament, also representing the South of Scotland.  His history has been slightly controversial, standing for the leadership against Salmond in 2004, and he is seen as being on the right of the party. A good speaker and bon vivant, many would see him as an asset to the SNP team.

Liam MacArthur
Orkney

Liam MacArthur was born and brought up in his target seat of Orkney and still has family there. He was a policy adviser to Jim Wallace, former deputy first minister, for two years and now works in public affairs. He is almost certain to take over from Jim Wallace MSP when he stands down in 2007 as the candidate for Orkney.

David Whitton
Strathkelvin and Bearsden

Former journalist and advisor to Donald Dewar, Whitton is best placed to take this seat if Jean Turner who won it as an Independent in 2003 steps down. Since Dewar's death Whitton has been employed in public relations and continues to be a very well known face within Scottish Labour.
